LAHORE: Boy loses eyes in fireworks explosion

By Our Reporter

LAHORE, Nov 1: A teenaged boy lost his eyes while his younger sister sustained serious injuries in a fireworks explosion at their house in Abu Bakar Park of Badami Bagh.

Arif told police that his son Usman, 16, was grinding sulphur to prepare fireworks for the Shab-i-Baraat when the incident took place.

He said that his son was crushing the explosive substance in a tray when it went off, causing critical injuries to his face and head.

Arif said that his 15-year-old daughter, Asifa, was standing near her brother. She too sustained serious injuries.

Both the injured were taken to the Mayo Hospital. Doctors said that the two had sustained burns besides other injuries. The boy has lost his eyes, the doctors said and added that the condition of both the injured was critical.

Usman was the eldest among his four brothers and three sisters. He had been helping his father at a “cigarette-pan” shop.

Meanwhile, more than a dozen people were admitted to different city hospitals who had sustained injuries in fireworks explosions.

Doctors said that the injured were out of danger.
