KARACHI, March 22: A worker of the Muhajir Quami Movement (Haqiqi) was gunned down in Azizabad on Saturday, police said.

Forty-one-year-old Junaid Iqbal was travelling in a rickshaw when some unidentified armed men on a motorcycle shot at him.

An Azizabad police station official said the investigators were in touch with the victim’s family. He said that the case would be lodged on the completion of medical formalities.

The deceased left a widow and four children, the official said, adding that he was a resident of Gulbahar and used to work as a real estate agent.

Motorcyclist killed

Police constables opened fire on two motorcyclists in Buffer Zone on Friday when they defied a signal and refused to stop for snap-checking that resulted in the death of one of them.

Witnesses and police officials said that the constables, Arif and Imran, were conducting snap-checking amid celebrations of Eid Miladun Nabi (Peace Be Upon Him) when dozens of motorcyclists thronged Buffer Zone area in Taimuria police jurisdiction. Police said that the motorcyclists, Zubair and Saqib, were signaled to stop, but they sped up instead. Their defiance triggered firing by the police which claimed the life of 22-year-old Zubair. His friend Saqib, however, sustained bullet wounds, the police added.

Witnesses said area people rushed to the spot and one of the onlookers recognised Zubair as a regular visitor of the area, while the injured Saqib started yelling that the policemen had killed his innocent friend only for not applying brakes on their signal.

The incident caused panic in the area. Area people staged protest, forcing the police high ups to intervene. Finally, a case was registered and the constables were arrested.

“We have registered an FIR 164/2008 under Sections 302 and 307 of the Pakistan Penal Code for murder and attempt to murder. Both constables have been locked up,” said an official of the Taimuria police station.
