KARACHI, March 28: Five people, including an activist of the Sunni Tehrik (ST), were killed on Friday in acts of violence in different parts of the city.
An office-bearer of the Sunni Tehrik was gunned down in Bhitaiabad in the limits of the Ibrahim Hyderi police station.
The deceased, identified as Mohammad Javed, 32, was in charge of Sector 124, Korangi. Javed had come to visit someone in Bhitaiabad when he was targeted.
The police quoted the area people as saying that Javed was waiting for the door of an under-construction house to be opened when unknown assailants opened fire on him and swiftly fled, leaving him in a pool of his own blood.
The ST activist was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Sources in the hospital said that Javed received four bullets in the upper torso and one in the head. They said that the deceased had also suffered a bullet wound recently, which was yet to heal.
According to the police, the unknown attackers had used a Kalashnikov rifle and TT pistols to kill the ST office-bearer, who was a resident of Korangi.
A senior police official unwilling to be named pointed out that the killing took place at the same point where a few weeks ago a clash between the activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the Sunni Tehrik had taken place.
Earlier, on Thursday night, an activist of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi was gunned down by unknown persons in Shah Faisal Colony.
Police said that Mohammad Junaid was sitting at an eatery in Shah Faisal Colony No 1 where two persons riding a motorcycle appeared and opened fire on the young man. He was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Police said that the incident coincided with the ambush of the two policemen in the limits of Sharea Faisal police station on Thursday night.
Cleric killed
The faculty member of a religious seminary was shot dead by unknown attackers in Baldia Town on Friday afternoon.
The deceased, Abdul Malik, 40, was a resident of Frontier Colony, Site. Quoting eyewitnesses, the police said that Mr Malik was passing through Ittehad Town in his car when four to five persons in a white Toyota Corolla opened fire on him and fled. The victim died on the spot, they added.
According to the police, eyewitnesses managed to recall only three digits (743) of the registration number of the attackers’ vehicle.
The victim received bullets to his head and abdomen. Police took Mr Malik’s body to the Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Site Town SP Athar Rasheed Butt said that Abdul Malik was nominated in a murder FIR registered at the Sharea Faisal police station some three to four months back.
A duty officer at the Sharea Faisal police station also confirmed the FIR saying that the deceased had lodged an FIR under Section 324 pertaining to a dispute over the possession of an apartment and the rival party had also lodged a counter FIR under Section 302 nominating Abdul Malik as a suspect in the murder of a person who had been killed in the dispute.
Following the incident, students of Ashraful Madaris located in Gulistan-i-Jauhar took to the streets pelting passing vehicles with stones. However, Shah Faisal SP Javed Meher said that law and order situation remained under control and no action was taken against the protesting students.
