KARACHI, May 1: A man was stabbed and then shot to death while his wife was left seriously wounded in their home when unknown gunmen stormed into their Keamari residence on Thursday. The coupled had hired the house a few months ago after getting married of their free will in their ancestral village in the NWFP.

Area police suspected the woman’s family behind the attack who, a senior police officer claimed, were against her marriage with deceased Munir Khan. However, the Jackson police had not registered a case till late in the night and were trying to contact the victims’ families.

They said the woman’s family lived in Karachi.

Mr Khan was overpowered by the suspects and stabbed several times by the armed men when he opened the door on their knock. Later, the sound of a single gunshot attracted his wife, who came out of the room and found his husband shot.

“The culprits also stabbed and seriously wounded her. However, it seems that they ran away after her cries alerted neighbours,” said an official at the Jackson police station.

“The house situated in Gulshan-i-Sikander was acquired on rent by the couple a couple of months ago. As we came to know through area people, the couple had got married against the will of their families a year ago and arrived in Karachi.”

The official said the police had reason to suspect a brother of the woman being behind the attack as she had shared concerns about it with her neighbours, and police were trying to find him.

“But currently Bino Naz is seriously injured and not in a position to tell anything about the incident. She is being treated at the Civil Hospital and we would surely lodge a case preferably on her complaint,” said the official.

Husband ‘dies’

A 70-year-old man lost his life after falling to the ground following a brawl with his wife. Area police appeared to be confused about the case.

However, the Malir Cantt police later registered an FIR (36/2008) under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code. Police said the victim lived with his fourth wife in a rented quarter in Malir Cantt.

“But no arrest has been made yet,” said an official at the police station. “Actually, Dawood fell to the ground after a brief scuffle with his wife and due to his ill health he couldn’t survive the sharp knock in the head. He bled from the nose and mouth and died after a short while.”

Body found

The body of a young man was found in the bushes in Model Colony. Police suspected that the victim was killed a couple of days after being tortured. The body of 25-year-old Ghulam Sakhi was found in Laasi Para, said an official at the Model Colony police station, adding that deep marks of an axe strike were visible on his chest and back.

“We also found an identity card in his pocket, which led to his being identified. We later moved his body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where his family members disallowed autopsy and took away the body for burial,” added the official.

Police said the case for the alleged murder of Ghulam Sakhi was likely to be registered with the consent of the deceased’s family, who were busy in his burial.
