KARACHI, May 16: The civil judge and judicial magistrate, South, Zeeshan Akthar, on Friday remanded 27 activists of the Sunni Tehrik in police custody till May 29.

According to the prosecution, the police arrested the ST men, Asif, Sohail, Yasir, Danish Haroon, Naeem Qadri, Irfan alias Mama, Kashif alias Amir, Faheem, Fahad alias Hameed, Zeeshan, Shahid, Amjad Qadri and others for possessing illegal weapons after a clash with a rival political group in Ranchhore Line on May 15.

The police registered a case (FIR No 102/05) under Sections 147, 148, 149 and 337-H, I of the Pakistan Penal Code, while 27 cases (FIR Nos 3 to 29/05) were registered under Section 13-D of the Arms Ordinance against the ST workers at the Risala police station.

Three acquitted

The additional district and sessions judge-II, South and East (Judicial Complex), Ghulam Rasool Samoo, acquitted two brothers and a nephew of the alleged Lyari gangster Arshad Pappu in an attempt to murder case due to a lack of evidence.

The judge after recording the final arguments from both sides acquitted the brothers of Arshad Pappu, Yasir Arafat, and Nasir, and his nephew Bilal.

The judge in his verdict said that the prosecution had failed to prove the involvement of the accused in the case.

The prosecution said that Taj Mohammad along with his son, Mohammad Azeem, was coming back from the Civil Hospital on June 24, 2005 when they were allegedly intercepted by Yasir Arafat and his associates who opened fire on them, injuring Taj Mohammad and his son.

A case (FIR No 1025) was registered under Section 324/34 at the Risala police station.

The defence counsel, Mohammad Farooq, argued that the police had implicated his clients in the case as the complainant, Taj Mohammad, and his son in their statements before a trial court had not mentioned their names, but stated that some unknown persons had attacked them.

He said that the prosecution had failed to produce any evidence in the court against the accused and prayed for the acquittal of his clients.

However, the public prosecutor argued that the prosecution had proved the case against the accused.

Show-cause notice

The civil judge and judicial magistrate, Central, Sohail Ahmed, re-issued a show-cause to the investigation officer directing him to submit a charge-sheet till May 25 in a case against three policemen who had allegedly opened fire on two motorcyclists.

According to the prosecution, the police constables, Mohammad Imran, Arif Hussain and Salman Farsi, had allegedly opened fire on Zubair Khan and Mohammad Saqib on March 21 near Sakhi Hasan, North Nazimabad.

Both the youngsters were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, but Zubair was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital while Saqib sustained critical wounds.

Earlier, the court had issued a number of show-cause notices to the IO and had also directed the SSP (investigation), West, to ask the IO to submit a charge-sheet; however, he had so far failed to comply with the court’s orders.

A case (FIR No 164/08) was registered against the three policemen under Sections 302, 324/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Taimuria police station.
