HYDERABAD, Sept 3: Young Marxist scholar and Lecturer, Philosophy Department, University of Sindh, Asim Ali Akhund, popularly known as Comrade Asim died in a Karachi hospital on Tuesday. He was 32.

The only son of his parents, he leaves behind his Russian wife and two sons.

Asim had undergone cardiac surgery after which complications developed.

He was laid to rest at Gulistan Sajad graveyard on Wednesday. A large number of progressive leaders, intellectuals, writers and colleagues attended his funeral.

Asim was a well-known figure in Hyderabad.

Besides teaching, he was also an activist of the Labour Party of Pakistan and before that he was associated with the Communist Party.

After graduating from the University of Sindh, Asim did his Masters from Moscow State University.

He was a brilliant writer of English, Sindhi and Russian. His office at the Sindh University and home in Hyderabad were always open to young students and political activists.

He was an ardent reader of political history, literature and philosophy, and was an eloquent speaker.

Besides his political activities, he published a serious bimonthly magazine “Adarsh” in Sindhi which focused on ideological, literary and political issues along with university colleagues.

Local political and literary circles have termed his death as an irreparable loss to Sindh’s progressive political movement.
