LAHORE Three policemen were injured when unidentified persons from Dheera village attacked a group of Chinese laying sewerage in Bengali village in the Burki area on Wednesday, says a DHA spokesman.

The angry people torched four police motorcycles in protest against the digging of a road leading to their village from Bengali village for sewerage work.

DHA spokesman Tajamul Husain told Dawn that at least 25 Chinese of a construction company were working on sewerage in Bengali village when more than 100 people, said to be the residents of Dheera village, reached there, slapped the Chinese and stopped them from work.

He said the mob attacked Burki policemen who were deployed there for foreigners' security when they intervened.

He said the attackers damaged the machinery and torched four motorcycles. They fled when more police arrived.

Husain said the Chinese company was working on a DHA project of sewerage, schools, hospitals and roads in Bengali village.

He said initially DHA misunderstood the attackers as Bengali village people, but it came to know later that the attackers were from Dheera village.

He said DHA officials accompanied by Chinese and their lawyers were present at the Burki police station to register a case against the attackers.

He said the attackers misunderstood that DHA was digging the road leading to their village, and that it would not repair it.

He said Rs265,000 had already been deposited with Nishtar Town for the repair of the road. He said no Chinese or DHA official was injured in the incident.

Burki police said investigation had been started and raids were being conducted for the arrest of the suspects.

Burki circle DSP Javed Iqbal Virk said a policeman, two DHA workers and two other people were injured in the row. He, however, said Chinese were not working at the site.
